An absolutely gorgeous, nineteenth century solid silver hallmarked (we believe to be Dutch or possibly French) large, ornate hinged heart pendant or pill box with beautifully embossed repousse work on both the front & back, to include – a winged angel face, an un-monogrammed cartouche and a crown pediment composed of reticulated & embossed leaves. It measures an impressive 3-5/16” high overall (to the top of the ring) x 2-3/8” wide x 7/8” deep and weighs 42.8 grams. The heart is hinged on the back and opens to reveal a compartment which could be used as a pill box. There is a touchmark/hallmark on the front rim (worn from age & use) which appears to be a stylized leaf (?) and a sideways letter G (see close-up). The condition is excellent with no dings, bends, breaks, touch-ups or repairs, only light surface wear to the patina from gentle use. Very fine quality and beautifully made with lovely detail work. A fabulous antique silver box that’s a pendant which can be worn around the neck. It’s fresh from a home on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore.

Up in this auction is an amazing piece, an original Stephen Hickman oil on canvas of a fierce Unicorn. Stephen Hickman is a Science Fiction and Fantasy Illustrator artist. The painting is monogrammed and dated 1980 in the lower right and measures approx. 30″ across. Truly a stunning piece by a master award winning listed artist.

Stephen Hickman has been illustrating science fiction and fantasy for three decades. His work is inspired by the masters of fantasy and science fiction writing — J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, A. Merritt, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Clark Ashton Smith.
His illustrations have been used as cover work for many contemporary writers: Stephen Brust, Hal Colbatch, Tom Cool, Gordon Dickson, David Drake, Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Andre Norton, Jerry Pournelle, and Steve Stirling among others.
Hickman’s work has earned him critical acclaim, including a World Science Fiction Convention’s Hugo Award and 5 Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists.

In 1994 he was awarded a Hugo Award from the World Science Fiction Convention for the United States Postal Service’s Space Fantasy Commemorative Booklet of stamps, the first official recognition by the government of the SF genre.
In 1996, Hickman created the Cthulhu statuette inspired by an earlier cover illustration done for H.P. Lovecraft’s story The Call of Cthulhu (Baen Books). The statuette was produced and distributed by Bowen Designs. A second edition is now available, as well as a bust of H.P. Lovecraft himself.

Description composed by world renowned Asian expert & appraiser, Mr. Anthony Lee. His bio is below. Up in this auction is an antique (14th Century circa 1350 to 1400) mediaeval antiphonal page, vellum. Probably Italy or Croatia, ca 1350 – 1400.
It is the ordo of the mass section. in remissiónem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum, et vitam ventúri sæculi. Amen.
Translates to: The forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
It is the end of the Apostles or Nicaen Creed (CREDO)

Antiphonal are huge pages from large books of the order of the mass large enough to be visible by a large number of choir members from one lectern traditionally in the choir section of the church.
It measures approx. 12 1/2″ x 18 3/4″ for the visible, matted, glazed and framed approx. 19 1/4″ x 26″.
Antique Scientific Equipment Laboratory Vacuum Pump Bell Jar Scientific Hobunkwan Auction Ending 12/22/14 http://yqz.me/HobunkwanEarly 1900’s, mahogany and brass single arm vacuum pump with a name plate for Hobunkwan, Osaka. It has a mahogany base board situated on mahogany feet. It has a turned column for the iron pump arm and a brass piston casing. A series of tubes feeds to a 8 1/2″ diameter brass plate with a frosted glass top. It has a hand-blown glass bell jar with lots of bubbles. There is a hook inside of the dome, also made of glass. It measures at approx. 29 1/2″ tall x 28 1/2″ long x 9 3/4 deep. This is a solid, heavy piece. There are places of wood rubbing, mahogany wood chipping, and wear on the metals and cast iron handle. Oxidation and signs of well use on the brass piston casing. The glass bell jar is in great condition. Please make sure to check all of our photos. Overall nice antiquated laboratory equipment. Antique Mills Five Cent Spearmint Gooseneck Slot Machine numbered 55297. We do not claim to be experts in slot machines so we will share with you what we know. Set on a wooden base, this slot machine functions when we placed a nickle in the slot and pull the lever. So cool! Along the front of the machine it lists all of the different combinations you can get with the different types of gum symbols. Embossed along the front is a bell with1776 and a small owl. We are missing the back cover and the wooden base has losses to the front. There is paint loss on the machine and the inside is in need of a good cleaning with some oxidation to the metal. It measures approx. 24″ tall by 14″ wide. Be sure to see all our photos for specifics. A great piece to leave as-is or to restore! We just love it! HAPPY BIDDING!!

The Mills Novelty Company, Incorporated of Chicago, Illinois was once a leading manufacturer of coin operated machines, including slot machines, vending machines, and jukeboxes, in the United States. Between about 1905 and 1930, the company’s products included the Mills Violano-Virtuoso and its predecessors, celebrated machines that automatically played a violin and, after about 1909, a piano. By 1944 the name of the company had changed to Mills Industries, Incorporated. The slot machine division was then owned by Bell-O-Matic Corporation. By the late 1930s, vending machines were being installed by Mills Automatic Merchandising Corporation of New York.

For those not familiar with Currier & Ives or perhaps just curious about them, here is a little history from Wikipedia:
Currier and Ives was a successful American printmaking firm headed by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). Based in New York City from 1834–1907, the prolific firm produced prints from paintings by fine artists as black and white lithographs that were hand colored. Lithographic prints could be reproduced quickly and purchased inexpensively, and the firm called itself “the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints” and advertised its lithographs as “colored engravings for the people.”
The name Currier & Ives first appeared in 1857, when Currier invited James Merritt Ives (1824–95), the company’s bookkeeper and accountant, to become his partner. James Merritt Ives, who was born on March 5, 1824 in New York City, married Caroline Clark in 1852. She was the sister-in-law of Nathaniel’s brother, Charles Currier, and it was Charles who recommended James Ives to his brother. Nathaniel Currier soon noticed Ives’s dedication to his business and his artistic knowledge and insight into what the public wanted. The younger man quickly became the general manager of the firm, handling the financial side of the business by modernizing the bookkeeping, reorganizing inventory, and streamlining the print process. Ives also helped Currier interview potential artists and craftsmen. The younger man had a flair for gauging popular interests and aided in selecting the images the firm would publish and expanding the firm’s range to include political satire, and sentimental scenes such as sleigh rides in the country and steamboat races. In 1857, Currier made Ives a full partner.The firm Currier and Ives described itself as “Publishers of Cheap and Popular Prints”. At least 7,500 lithographs were published in the firm’s 72 years of operation. Artists produced two to three new images every week for 64 years (1834–1895), producing more than a million prints by hand-colored lithography. For the original drawings, Currier & Ives employed or used the work of many celebrated artists of the day including J.F. Butterworth, George Inness, Thomas Nast, C.H. Moore, and Eastman Johnson. The stars of the firm were Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, who specialized in sporting scenes; Louis Maurer, who executed genre scenes; George H. Durrie, who supplied winter scenes; and Fanny Palmer, who liked to do picturesque panoramas of the American landscape, and who was the first woman in the United States to make her living as a full-time artist. All lithographs were produced on lithographic limestone printing plates on which the drawing was done by hand. A stone often took over a week to prepare for printing. Each print was pulled by hand. Prints were hand-colored by a dozen or more women, often immigrants from Germany with an art background, who worked in assembly-line fashion, one color to a worker, and who were paid $6 for every 100 colored prints. The favored colors were clear and simple, and the drawing was bold and direct.

Canada/US – early 1900’s. Northwest Coast Haida Native Tsimshian First Nations Carved Wood Slave Figure. Of carved wood and painted brown. Carved asa male, possibly a slave or vanquished warrior figure, in a couching form with knees bent and hands clasped behind his back, the head pulled back with an animal figure emanating from the tied wrists and pulling at the figure’s topknot. Standing on a wood ring. Cracked, chipping and loss of pigment in areas (see photos). The shape and twisted form of this figure corresponds to the form of some massive house posts / piers found in west coast house interiors, here carved in a diminutive form possibly for trade purposes in the early 20th century around the same time as the popularization of miniature totem poles in argyllite. The very round eyes in deep wells, nose and wide mouth strongly suggest Haida sculpture, and likely Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) as the origin of this piece. It measures approx. 17 3/4″ tall x 5 1/2″ x 6 1/4″.
For those not familiar with Anthony Lee here is his bio: Anthony M. Lee is an institutional, market and collection consultant specializing in the arts of China, Japan, Korea, Himalayan Kingdoms, South and Southeast Asia. Starting as a salesperson at age 14 in Chinese antiques in a family business, he went on to university studies in Asian arts, as well as receiving his licenses in tea ceremony, with further studies of ceramics and religious art over eight years in Japan. For several years he was an associate dealer with Sotheby’s online site and consultant with various auction houses and museums. Anthony has acted as consultant to over 20 museums, government agencies and trusts including the largest museums in Canada and the US, as well as major collectors, dealers, insurance and transportation companies worldwide.
He is considered by many to be one of the foremost experts in the world in Asian Art & Artifacts.

1878 Antique 18K Gold Guilloche Enamel Longines Ernest Francillon Pocket Watch

Up in this auction is an original Ernest Francillon Solid 18K Gold and black & blue enameled Longines pocket watch. 15 Jewel, key wind, serialnumber 152931 on the back plate, marked 18 in numerous spots on the case, but we also acid tested it and it is solid 18K gold. It has an exquisite guilloche case with black enamel leaves and designs with just a touch of accent blues. The face is marked simply Ernest Francillon. The exterior case is in superb condition, the signed interior back plate has some key scratches on it and it needs a new crystal as it is missing. We do not have a key to fit this, so we do not know if it works, so you are buying it as is. It weighs 36.23 grams, even the fob ring tested 18K gold.
Ernest Francillon (born 10 July 1834 in Lausanne), was the Swiss manager of Longines watches and an entrepreneur. He was the nephew of Auguste Agassiz. He died on 3 April 1900 in Saint-Imier, where he founded the factory. A monument to has memory was erected on 13 October 1907.

In 1832, Auguste Agassiz began selling etablissage-produced watches under the name “Agassiz & Compagnie” and was particularly successful selling those watches in North America.
In the 1850’s, Agassiz passed control of his company to his nephew, Ernest Francillon. Francillon wanted to modernize the production of watches and believed that bringing all the final assembly and finish operations together into one factory would be a more efficient method of production. To accomplish this, Francillon built a factory on a piece of land known as “Les Longines” and the Longines brand was born.
The A. Wittnauer Co. became the exclusive sales agent for Longines in 1880, starting a relationship that would last for 114 years
Vintage Antique 1930’s 1940’s C.F. Martin Soprano Ukulele Uke with Cloth Case

First off we are not Martin or Ukulele experts, so, please feel free to ask any questions. We believe this is a “Style 0″ C.F. Martin Soprano Uke.With a cloth carrying case. We believe from our research, this is after 1935 to the early 1940’s. We see a small missing glaze spot on the top in the lower right corner, about the size of half our little fingernail. Everything we see says this is really clean and in great shape. It measures overall approx. 21″ by 6 3/8″ wide. GOOD LUCK!!

Martin is highly regarded for its steel-string guitars and is a leading mass-manufacturer of flattop acoustics. Martin instruments can cost thousands of dollars and vintage instruments often cost six figures. The company has also made several models of electric guitars and electric basses.
The company’s headquarters and primary factory are in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, located in the Lehigh Valley region of the state. Martin also manufactures instruments in Mexico. Martin produced 182 instruments during 1900, increasing to 24,085 in 2000.
RARE 1899 Dieffenbacher Roller Barrel Organ Upright Hotel Drop Down Desk NR yqz

This is what we love about this business. Coming across a piece of history like this. We were recently at an estate auction in Pennsylvania and this piece came up. We could not resist it. It is a barrel organ (also called a roller organ) built into an upright desk, with two drawers on the bottom, a drop down leaf and a series of cubby holes at the top. Signed by P.L. Dieffenbacher of Turbotville, Pennsylvania. To us it looks like a hotel lobby type desk.
When we bought it we thought we would go home and do some quick research on it and that would be that. BUT NO… we could not find another like it anywhere. So… doing some research on where to look lead us to an amazing organization, full of even more remarkable people. AMICA The Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors’ Association. We contacted the president of the chapter for our area and he graciously agreed to look at photos of it. Next thing we knew we had folks calling, emailing, and sharing information about this remarkable piece. Here are the facts as we were able to determine them:
This was made by P.L. Dieffenbacher of Turbotville, PA
He was a cabinet maker and organ maker.
Including this one only three of his instruments are known of. Two organs and one musical contraption for doing bird calls.All three of those instruments were at one time donated to the Hershey Museum by Dieffenbacher’s granddaughter.
The above facts are noted in Ray Brunner’s fantastic book, That Ingenious Business: Pennsylvania-German Organ Builders (The Pennsylvania-German Society, 1990)
In that book, Mr. Brunner pictures both the other organ and this organ that we are selling. (Mr. Brunner currently owns that other organ.)
All of those instruments were sold when the Hershey Museum deaccessioned their antique collection. (15 to 20 years ago.)
This organ was restored by James McFarland somewhere around 1976.
