We were amazed to have this museum quality rarity show up on our doorstep. It is a book with all the pages being made of vellum and a huge wax seal

in a brass disc attached to the book with a golden cord, with all the pages being written in OLD German and Latin. In the center is a hand painted coat of arms. All of that sealed in a tin container made to hold everything safely. When we started to research this we found that it is what is called a

PATENT OF NOBILITY

Francis the Second, by the grace of God Holy Roman Emperor (King of Austria); King of Hungary, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia, Lodomeria and Jerusalem; Archduke of Austria; Duke of Lorraine, Salzburg, Würzburg, Franconia, Styria, Carinthia and Carniola; Grand Duke of Cracow; Grand Prince of Transylvania; Margrave of Moravia; Duke of Sandomir, Masovia, Lublin, Upper and Lower Silesia, Auschwitz and Zator, Teschen and Friuli; Prince of Berchtesgaden and Mergentheim; Princely Count of Habsburg, Gorizia and Gradisca and of the Tirol; and Margrave of Upper and Lower Lusatia and in Istria. And it is his 6″ wax seal in the brass disc. The cord tying the book to the seal (and running through the middle of the seal) is made with threads of 14K gold braided into the cord.

The coat of arms in the center was issued to the Schaller family in 1792 and became their family’s coat of arms from that point forward.

These ARE VERY RARE AND ARE NORMALLY ONLY FOUND IN MUSEUMS ANY MORE!!

Francis II (German: Franz II., Erwählter Römischer Kaiser) (12 February 1768 – 2 March 1835) was the last Holy Roman Emperor, ruling from 1792 until 6 August 1806, when he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire after the disastrous defeat of the Third Coalition by Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz.

In the tin container this measures approx. 15 1/2″ x 13″ x 2 1/2″.

antique slave tag. This 1830 dated tag is an early date for the slave hire badges, since the earliest known date on any tag is the year 1800. The number 116 is the issue sequence for the occupation of servant. Verso the tag is ornately etched with “SEDALIA PLANTATION THE BEARER IS AUTHORIZED TO BE IN NATCHEZ AT ANY HOUR WITH BUGGY AND HORSE 1830.” Recto, it reads Sedalia Plantation 1830 #116 within the outline of mid-relief raised detailed ring design. Now an object of curiosity, and no longer a sign of captivity, the tag measures at approx. 2.5 x 2.” There is a warm patina that covers the bronze tag, and you can see the signs of high detail on the ornate etching.

As brutal as it is to consider this terrible piece of hardware, it is a part of history and can remind us of the progress we have made as a society in the many decades since this was in use. Let us not forget that there are people still in the world who have been forcibly removed from their families and put into modern captivity.

nicely hand-carved and fitted, all made from scratch, with no indicators of a ready made kit! It’s not hard to see the time, effort, and love that went into making this detailed masterpiece. Even the rose windows are ornately applied, made from what appears to be a shiny, sheet like material, adorned with paint to mimic the ornate design of cathedral windows. Each molding and frame creating the two towers, pinnacles, arcades, and gables are original wood. In addition, the beautiful and famous west facade of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris has several miniature clay figurines attached to the plinth- there’s a priest, and several Frenchmen in period attire.

The cathedral is on a wooden plinth, measuring at approx. 11.75 x 18.25 x 9.75,” and the cathedral itself measures at approx. 12″ h x 10″ w; weighing a sturdy 5.8 pounds! There are places of wood glue formation or solidification, the tips of the pinnacles are chipped off, wear of the wood is apparent, and its apparent that some of the clay figures have detached, with one chipped off. Otherwise, a truly amazing folk art piece. You won’t be disappointed with this Notre Dame miniature scale wooden model! Happy Bidding!

Up in this auction is an amazing estate find. A 1913, (movement marked A13 which is code for the first half of 1913), westminster bracket clock with an exquisite mahogany case, arched beveled glass door. It has a 5 rod chime system. It has the key and pendulum and we did have it up and running

just prior to listing. Except for some rubs to the face it is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. It measures approx. 11″ x 8″ x 14 1/2″ high. GOOD LUCK!!

For those not familiar with Junghans, here is their history off of the clockguy site on the internet (GREAT SITE!!):

Gebr Junghans Uhrenfabrik was established by Erhard Junghans with Franz Xaver in 1861 in the Black Forest, making parts for clocks. Erhard Junghans (1823-70) originally followed in his father’s footsteps working as a designer in an Schramberg porcelain factory in the Black Forest.

By 1861, Erhard Junghans had set aside capital to start his own business producing accessories for clocks and subsequently complete clocks. He enlisted his brother Xaver, a cabinetmaker then living in America, to acquire the assembly-line machinery for making clock parts. Once the factory and the equipment were set up, Gerhard focused on running the business, his brother Xaver lead the production of clock cases and a professional clockmaker was hired to oversee the production of movements. After Erhard’s death in 1870, the company was run by his sons Arthur and Erhard Jr.In 1866 the Junghans brand was established and by 1870 they were producing 100 clocks per day. In 1870 Arthur Junghans, son of the founder took over and the company went ahead rapidly.

Following the registration as early as 1877 of the first factory trademark, “eagle with flag”, the JUNGHANS trademark, a clock cogwheel fashioned into a eight-pointed star, became the brand symbol in 1890. Three years later, the millionth timepiece was produced. In 1903 JUNGHANS was the largest clock-maker in the world. They were well-known for producing a wide variety of clocks. The company further expanded over years merging with other well-known German clockmakers including Lenzkirch, Thomas Haller and Gustav Becker.

In this auction, we have a Pennsylvania Manuscript ledger kept by local farmer of Lancaster County Pennsylvania. It is recorded with hand-written entries; primarily from the 1788-1836.The ledger has a total of approx. 25-30 pages that are filled with accounts. The accounts for each customer are listed and updated for years. This ledger is a valuable genealogical resource with many families and business patrons listed.

The ledger is made at the Ephrata Cloister using laid paper watermarked CB, (Christian Bauman). It is marked with understandable wear from the business of the farmer. It measures approx. 12.5 x 8.25 x 0.75.” There pages in the ledger book is intact and binding is still good considering it’s over 225 years old! There is foxing and toning on the pages, and the covers are very worn (as seen in the photos). What an interesting piece of history, and great genealogical tool! Happy Bidding!

1776 and a small owl. We are missing the back cover and the wooden base has losses to the front. There is paint loss on the machine and the inside is in need of a good cleaning with some oxidation to the metal. It measures approx. 24″ tall by 14″ wide. The Mills Novelty Company, Incorporated of Chicago, Illinois was once a leading manufacturer of coin operated machines, including slot machines, vending machines, and jukeboxes, in the United States. Between about 1905 and 1930, the company’s products included the Mills Violano-Virtuoso and its predecessors, celebrated machines that automatically played a violin and, after about 1909, a piano. By 1944 the name of the company had changed to Mills Industries, Incorporated. The slot machine division was then owned by Bell-O-Matic Corporation. By the late 1930s, vending machines were being installed by Mills Automatic Merchandising Corporation of New York.

For those not familiar with Currier & Ives or perhaps just curious about them, here is a little history from Wikipedia:

Currier and Ives was a successful American printmaking firm headed by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). Based in New York City from 1834–1907, the prolific firm produced prints from paintings by fine artists as black and white lithographs that were hand colored. Lithographic prints could be reproduced quickly and purchased inexpensively, and the firm called itself “the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints” and advertised its lithographs as “colored engravings for the people.”

The name Currier & Ives first appeared in 1857, when Currier invited James Merritt Ives (1824–95), the company’s bookkeeper and accountant, to become his partner. James Merritt Ives, who was born on March 5, 1824 in New York City, married Caroline Clark in 1852. She was the sister-in-law of Nathaniel’s brother, Charles Currier, and it was Charles who recommended James Ives to his brother. Nathaniel Currier soon noticed Ives’s dedication to his business and his artistic knowledge and insight into what the public wanted. The younger man quickly became the general manager of the firm, handling the financial side of the business by modernizing the bookkeeping, reorganizing inventory, and streamlining the print process. Ives also helped Currier interview potential artists and craftsmen. The younger man had a flair for gauging popular interests and aided in selecting the images the firm would publish and expanding the firm’s range to include political satire, and sentimental scenes such as sleigh rides in the country and steamboat races. In 1857, Currier made Ives a full partner.

The firm Currier and Ives described itself as “Publishers of Cheap and Popular Prints”. At least 7,500 lithographs were published in the firm’s 72 years of operation. Artists produced two to three new images every week for 64 years (1834–1895), producing more than a million prints by hand-colored lithography. For the original drawings, Currier & Ives employed or used the work of many celebrated artists of the day including J.F. Butterworth, George Inness, Thomas Nast, C.H. Moore, and Eastman Johnson. The stars of the firm were Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, who specialized in sporting scenes; Louis Maurer, who executed genre scenes; George H. Durrie, who supplied winter scenes; and Fanny Palmer, who liked to do picturesque panoramas of the American landscape, and who was the first woman in the United States to make her living as a full-time artist. All lithographs were produced on lithographic limestone printing plates on which the drawing was done by hand. A stone often took over a week to prepare for printing. Each print was pulled by hand. Prints were hand-colored by a dozen or more women, often immigrants from Germany with an art background, who worked in assembly-line fashion, one color to a worker, and who were paid $6 for every 100 colored prints. The favored colors were clear and simple, and the drawing was bold and direct.
